How to Check the Wind Forecast for Kitesurfing & Wingfoiling in the San Francisco Bay Area
Hey everyone, it’s John from KiteTheBay. One of the most common questions I get from people looking into kitesurfing lessons San Francisco Bay or beginner wingfoiling classes is: “How do I know when it’s going to be windy?”
The San Francisco Bay has some of the most reliable thermal winds in the world, but timing and spot selection make all the difference. Here’s exactly how I check the forecast every day — and how you can too.
The Best Windy Season for Kitesurfing & Wingfoiling in the Bay
The prime season runs from spring through fall (roughly March/April through September/October). This is when the classic Bay Area thermal winds kick in — strong, consistent northwest winds that build in the afternoon as the inland valleys heat up.
Spring & Early Summer: Often the windiest and most consistent months. Great for lessons because the wind is reliable but not always nuclear.
Summer (June–August): Peak season. Expect solid 15–25+ knot afternoons most days. Perfect for progressing fast in our small-group lessons.
Fall: Still excellent, often with smoother, slightly less crowded conditions.
Winter can still deliver good sessions, but it’s completely different. Winds often swing from the south with passing storms, making them gustier and less predictable. These days suit more experienced riders and require extra caution with bigger swells and changing conditions. Many beginners and intermediates stick to lessons during the main season for the best (and safest) progression.
Best Tools to Check the Wind Forecast
Here are the forecasting tools I and most local riders use daily:
iKitesurf.com (and app) — The gold standard for the Bay Area. It offers live sensor readings (like Anita Rock at Crissy Field or Berkeley Marina), high-resolution models, and even pro forecasts during the season. Highly recommended for kiters and wingers.
Windy.com — Excellent visual wind maps. Great for seeing the big picture and how the wind flows through the Golden Gate and around the Bay.
Windfinder.com and WindGuru.cz — Solid forecasts with spot-specific data for Berkeley Marina, Crissy Field, and other key launch spots.
Bonus Checks:
NOAA tides (important — strong currents affect everything)
Local webcams at Crissy Field and Berkeley Marina
Weather Underground or the National Weather Service for general conditions
Pro Tip: Always cross-reference at least two sources. Look at both the predicted wind speed at 10–20 meters (kite/wing height) and real-time observations from nearby sensors.
What to Look For in a Good Session Day
Afternoon thermal ramp-up: Winds usually start light in the morning and build between noon and 4 PM. Plan your sessions accordingly.
Direction: Northwest/West is ideal for most Bay spots (side-shore to side-on).
Speed: 12–18 knots for beginners/learning, 18–25+ for freeriding and jumping.
Tides & Currents: Check tide times — certain spots are much better at high or mid tide.
